Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney had me at Miss Maple and lost me at gummy bugs! Okay, well, they didn’t lose me, just made me pause. But then they had me again at Elvis Parsley.
This seventh addition to the Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast series, Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery is a fun, cute and different holiday story. While the “Who Dun-it” aspect and the idea of the last book in a series is not new, the way Funk and Kearney presents things is fresh. And while it is perfect for fans of this series, you do not know the characters to really appreciate this title.
I love the “Murder Mystery Game” aspect (Clue would be proud) but instead of a murder (it is a children’s book after all) we have a missing book written by Agatha Crispy. I would say that two readings would be a good idea (one to read the story and the other to see the clues). As we follow the suspects looking for those clues, the story quickly moves along, rhyming along the way. We follow the food-characters and can snicker at the puns and silly representations of the suspects, such as Brie (who is cheese and grapes). Of course, our heroes Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast will save the day and a neat thank you comes about as their reward.
I read via an online reader copy, but think there will be a finished copy on my shelf when it comes out this September 2025. The holidays of winter are represented (though Christmas is a bit more obvious) so it is inclusive and a good jumping off point for you to talk about all the winter holidays as we see things like the Laktas waving at the train our Lady and Sir ride, as well as the Diwali lights and even meeting Solstice.
