I Hated You in High School by Kathleen Gros is A LGBTQ “friend’s kid sister to friends to enemies to friends to lovers” story that shows even in adulthood you can be unsure of yourself and can still be coming of age and terms with who you are. Overall it is a fun graphic novel that is not too sappy or pushy, but does have a few moments of very Pro-Pride that could be a little sugary. Things are pretty obvious where they are going (after all it is promoted as a “Enemies to Lovers” book) and the way things are set up.
The cozy illustrations add to the overall fun time of things. We have good details, medium without being too busy and not skimping on anything. The setting is in Canada but could really be anywhere. It is a nice friendship and family and lovers situation. The family of our main character are nice, realistic, familiar and don’t put on the drama too much (they seem to be more than accepting of their children’s life choices without a lot of comparison in or being the people who are forcing them into a certain mold. Sure, the sister needed a good kick in the pants (she is a bit type A personality) but that’s fine, too. The ending has a clever “PS” so make sure you don’t stop at the first “The End” mentioning.
I read it via an online reader copy, but do want to see the finished product as I want to see if the lack of color continues. And I don’t have long to wait as it is due mid-April 2025.
