“Wait, what just happened?” is the best review I read for this book. I most heartily concur with that statement.

Successful author Grady Green’s wife disappeared on a rainy night one year ago. Since then his life has unraveled and he’s been unable to write or sleep. His agent takes pity on him with the opportunity of a lifetime, to stay at a quiet cabin on a remote Scottish island to try to get some writing done. He and his trusty dog Columbo head off and all is well until he starts seeing his dead wife everywhere he goes.
Alice Feeney is indeed a queen of twists you do not see coming. Or perhaps with this one just leaving out vital information. I would have liked a bit more background about the island and its inhabitants but that would spoil the entire story. As I was reading I was picking up on the thriller vibes. Oh perhaps there’s more to this situation than meets the eye. Oh this narrator seems unreliable. Oh these characters were not communicating vital information to each other and keeping secrets they shouldn’t have. And then as we suddenly zoom to the end it’s “What the WHAT?!?!” Pretty much the only thing missing is a creepy festival with a wicker man.
Overall it’s a quick and breezy read that I enjoyably zipped through, even though (or especially because) it seemed to go from 0 to 60 out of nowhere. I can’t wait to visit the Isle of Amberly myself. Seems like a real chill destination.
