Batcat V02 Sink or Swim! by Meggie Ramm is a cute sequel to Batcat V01 Batcat. I recommend reading all three volumes back to back. But Batcat V03 Cooking Contest is not due right away (it is due mid/later April 2025). I say this because I had forgotten some of volume one by the time I got to two.
I like the modern characters and interesting messages that the Batcat series gives, but I don’t always find the characters lovable. Sure a (SPOILER) vampire penguin sounds cute, but they are not nice. And the school of fish, well they are smart, but also not nice (realistic, but not nice). And don’t get me going on skeleton mermaids! Then there are the illustrations, which are fun and are terribly simple, but not simplistic. They are bold, big, bubbly and colorful and not too crowded, but also do hold a lot. They allow you to concentrate on the story, but get pieces of it from the images as well.
Batcat themselves is non-binary. And if you hadn’t gotten that from book one, you do in volume two as Ramm tells you what non-binary means and comes out and says they are nonbinary (like Ramm). There are extras on that subject, as well as some how to draw the characters and a few other extras as well.
It is a nice series. When book one came out I gave a reader copy to a cousin of mine (who was older than the aimed at age (which is approximately ages 6-7 to 10) but mentally a little younger) and she really enjoyed it. So it is not just a weird adult saying this, kids are saying this too. Plus, how could you not like a character that is a cat and a bat????
