The Unlikely Aventuras of Ramón and El Cucuy: An Illustrated Chapter Book by Donna Barba Higuera and some funny illustrations by Juliana Perdomo is a fun story about family and a bit of mythology, that I read via an online reader copy.
Our narrator/main character is a young monster on the eve of his first assignment to scare a human child. They are the youngest in their class, and one of the few cucuys who do not have a Clump or name. Therefore, they must pass their first test to prove they deserve these things. The thing is, whereas in the past, the various “bogey monsters” have had centuries of training, our cucuy has not. Where the others wouldn’t think twice about eating their human assignments (each being is assigned a human to scare into behaving) our hero is finding out they like the human world, with its disgusting clean, soapy and fresh smells, the horrible sunshine and (GASP) smiles!
This story takes the idea of finding a home even if it is not where you started out (our Ramon has moved from New Mexico; our cucuy is from a delightful world of stench and earwax statues used to impress your class crush). This theme is not new, but the way Higuera presents it makes it fun. Especially for the (strong) 7-8 to 10 year old reader. It could be read to the younger crowd, but there is mention of eating children, so the sensitive child might not be the right audience. Overall, however, it is pretty simple, and what most kids see on TV cartoons today is probably more intense. I am not OMG best ever, but I wouldn’t say no to reading a second volume or more by the author.
