Learning poetry in a fun, simpler manner is a great way to introduce kids to the genre. And you can do that in Dino Poet : A Graphic Novel by Tom Angleberger. I would have liked to have seen more emphasis on poetry not needing to rhyme, but overall it is a clever book with enough humor to keep kids interested.
Currently available, I read via an online reader copy. Now, I might not purchase a copy for myself as it is on the easier side and not a read again for myself, plus, the simple illustrations do not “do it” for me, but I know that classrooms in particular need this book. Even libraries should have it as they can put it in not only a dinosaur display but a poetry display in April. I think this would help push the book as parents want poetry and kids want dinosaurs. They also want books that they can read solo (or with a little help, as the text can be a little older at times). Best for at least ages five to nine (a young ten would work, too), it does allow itself to be for most readers.
I like the humor with its somewhat off beatness and bordering on the absurd, with a not gross but almost almost gross factor. And sure, the dinosaurs want to eat the frog and/or other dinosaur(s), but I don’t know about anyone else, but I kind of routed for all of them to get not only a good meal and/or snack, but find their love of poetry all at the same time (and if they eat the frog or the main dinosaur, the poetry part can’t happen….it’s complicated).
