Maybe Brielle and Bear: Volume 1: (A Graphic Novel) (Once Upon a Time University) is not a pure 4, but it is a silly, fun, “meet cute” romance that has a bit of potential to be a smidgen darker and that potential gives it a slight boost over. Based on Beauty and the Beast (Brielle=Belle; Bear=Beast), this fairy tale follows the (so far) 10 rules of fairy tales. All the elements of falling in love, learning about each other and more are wrapped up in a pretty in pink bow that occasionally comes undone to give a little tense flavor to things.
Salomey Doku leaves this webtoon on an open note and 2026 is too far away for part two for my tastes! (Googling Brielle and Bear for more reading opportunities….). I read via online reader copy but it is due mid-late April 2025 so not too far off for your own personal reading pleasure. While I liked Doku’s story, there were a few places that felt like pieces of information were missing. And a few characters pop up without warning or without what their background is (though there are a few little “pop ups” to give a basic introduction). In other words, it is good, but not perfect. Hence, why I need more to fill in my blank spots!
The story is familiar, we have two star-crossed lovers (to be) who meet in the bookshop (they literally run into each other), followed by the feelings of embarrassment when we learn Bear likes to read fairy tales, we then get the meeting of our Gaston, and his cheerleader triplets (he dates one sister, one is very perky, the third we officially haven’t met yet). We have a best friend for Brielle and the rugby buddies of Bear. Then there is the meet again where our two players meet and learn each other’s names. We have the other bumps (learning secrets, sharing secrets, a few spats and misunderstandings and a Christmas trip home). It all comes down to the final countdown of Christmas at home and then the New Years Eve party for the real shake up to happen.
Overall, things are cute, colorful, perky and happy. The images are fairy tale 101. The college campus has flowers, the prince/beast has bees and butterflies surrounding his head. The princess/Belle has her head in the clouds. There are a few modern situations, but so far nothing has gone too dark (yet). I am not a romance reader, but this (again so far) has been a nice cozy read. I would recommend it for at least ages 14 and up to be on the safe side, just know your reader.
