The Girl Who Flew Away by Lee Dean was sent to me as an online reader copy. And I am glad of that as this is the kind of book I hate everything about… yet it is one of the most amazing books I have read.
We are getting a slice of life from some really not nice people (including our girl who flew/the point of view the story is told from) who are just trying to get out alive. The feeling of the time comes alive, the attitudes and the pain and hurt come out. If you have a trigger, it is probably here. Sometimes things are gratuitous, but also realistic. I have never been to Florida, and do not remember the late 1970s, but I think I have an idea of how messed up and wonderful it was. You know, just like today.
We follow Greer Johnson, a biracial woman in her early 20s. She is pregnant with her married boss’s baby. She has an unrequited crush on a former coworker. She is sent to live with a seemingly well-meaning couple in Florida so she is “out of sight/out of mind” back in winter drenched Pennsylvania. The ins and outs of Greer’s life unfold, sometimes you root for her, sometimes not. But all the while things happen. The format is typical graphic novel/comic with the style of the 70s loud and proud. The colors look like your grandmother’s rec room, and the details are both busy and simple. There is use of alcohol, drugs and a pregnant mother (Greer) smoking.
Things are relatable (or understandable) and yet, things are things I’ve never seen or read before. Come for a new book, leave with a lot on your plate; though not all are tasty, others are delicacies.
