Silver Sprocket seems to be my go to publisher/vendor right now. In my subscription there were a few zines that I never would have picked up on my own. And one of them was Sipping Season by Mariah-Rose Maire. It mentions their book Cook Like Your Ancestors: An Illustrated Guide to Intuitive Cooking with Recipes from Around the World. I was expecting all of it to be recipes about drinks from around the world. And there is some of that, but there is also a bit of history and how boycotts intertwine with everything.
It is not something that I enjoyed, but am not sorry I read. It was an experience and that is partly why I read books. I like finding new things. That’s not to say I didn’t immediately find something that is in my reading comfort zone (I did) but I actually might go back and see if I can figure out a recipe or two. I might even look into the movements and groups mentioned. Mariah-Rose Marie is not a “sweet little author.” They got some baddA$$ in them.
If you want to know what is going on, the cover can give you a pretty decent idea. Things are rough and are not going to read smoothly. The overall size is small, so you need to take your time. The pages are glossy and therefore slippery. But it really opens up a discussion for how to live a bit more aware of things. (The pumpkin latte drink is very politically correct.)
In the end, Silver Sprocket is political, therefore Mariah-Rose Maire is also political. So these books/zines and authors/illustrators are not for everyone. That includes their merchandise such as their stickers. Stickers that make me question why I read a couple of their publications, question my sanity and not to mention the sanity of the illustrators.
