20ish years ago, a cousin gave me the first volume of the Inuyasha manga because it was “just like” Ranma ½, which I loved. I found it was almost nothing like Ranma and the cousin admitted that even though the two series were both by Rumiko Takahashi, they didn’t actually have much in common (that I was interested in). No one would ever get hit on the head with a fowl training potty in Inuyasha. I’d never see a yeti riding a bull while holding a crane and eel in Inuyasha.
Several years ago, I had a very good friend who loved Inuyasha. I intended to give it another chance so I could talk about it with them.
In the current day, I battle my agoraphobia by getting fast ‘n’ easy to reads from the library, which are mostly manga. Re-enter Inuyasha.
I don’t think there’s much I can say about it that someone else hasn’t already said, but better.
Modern (at the time) girl, Kagome gets isekai’d to the past and she joins forces with the titular dog demon/human Inuyasha and an endearing cast of Rumic* weirdos. They search for pieces of the Shikon Jewel – which Kagome birthed and broke – and work to defeat the evil Naraku. It’s really good. It’s a fun action/ mystery/ thriller/ paranormal story with just enough silly. The characters are endearing, the villains are developed, the monsters creepy.
But again, I can’t say anything about Inuyasha that hasn’t been said. What I can add is that even if I’m late to the party and the people I wanted to see are gone, I’m happy I showed up.
*Rumic – an adjective for being like something created by Rumiko Takahashi, including that which was created by her.
