Hurricane by Jason Chin (due May 2025; read via an online reader copy) is exactly what you think it is. It is about hurricanes. Now, as an adult, I thought I knew a few things about it, but this really gets into everything on an introduction level and makes it fun to read. Even if you do know a little, this can expand that knowledge. Granted, it is all facts and very minimal in an actual story arc, so it can be dry, but it is not inaccessible. The biggest issue I had was I wish the illustrations had more real images and were not completely illustrated, but still it works well.

The fun part of the book is that after I had read it, enjoyed it, and planned on reviewing it, I then found an article about the author, Jason Chinn, in a local trade magazine. Learning about the author in a not too in depth interview, was as fun (if not more so) than the book itself. This interview of the highlights of Chin’s career, makes me want to read more he has created. They are mostly science based, but he is also the illustrator of Watercress by Andrea Wang.
And if you know Watercress and those illustrations, it gives you a good idea how Hurricane plays out with the artwork. This book focuses on the North Carolina region, but the facts are pretty much universal. The audience is for the at least five and up, but even older than that would be best. It is not an easy book, but it is not a difficult book to experience.
