In 2020 The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt was published. And according to its publisher description, it became an instant Halloween classic. In July 2025 a new gift edition will be published. I am not sure how this differs from the original as I read this as an online reader copy. But regardless of the extras it might have, it will still be the same sweet book about being yourself and the adventures you will have because of it. The story is sweet and simple (the little ghost is a quilt that is heavy, does not let him fly well, or twist and turn. He gets hot when he goes too fast). And while the other ghosts can float and see all the fun the kids have on Halloween every year, he hides on a clothes line without a good view. But one day, after a chance encounter with a young boy, things change and adventure awaits.
And in later August 2025 Riel Nason and Byron Eggenschwiler will publish The Little Ghost Quilt’s Winter Surprise. This time, since our little ghost is a quilt, they are able to go out on a cold winter day and have fun, but the other ghosts fly fast and freeze fast due to the cold air. And they enjoy indoor activities. Little Ghost does too, but wants to explore. He remembers Halloween and wonders what the humans do in winter. Then we get a delightful adventure of our little ghost sharing what he finds with his ghostly friends.
The artwork in both books are what really make things fun, fresh and delightful. There is a retro look to things, but also keeps a modern feeling to grab the attention of the today reader. The stories are slightly longer than traditional picture books, but they do adapt to most ages as the illustrations allow themselves to be read as well as the text. As an adult, I appreciate how things come together in a special package. The second book keeps up with the spookiness of the first and Halloween, when it shows a unique treat in the ghostly house and I love the combination of creepy, but still very sweet.
Book two was also read as an online reader copy, but once they are both out, I think these books will make a great addition to my personal library and/or my grand nieces!
