The Legend of Vox Machina: The Whitestone Chronicles Volume 1 Ripley by Critical Role, Tyler Walpole and Marieke Nijkamp is not OMG BEST BOOK EVER but it is a nice read. You know the story if you’ve followed Vox Machina in any of its forms, but also because it is a fairly straightforward Villain who does not see herself as Villain (and later a couple forms of revenge) story. The artwork is familiar. You know the scenes and setting. Few real surprises, but it is a good read if you like a simpler fantasy reading in a graphic novel format. I liked it, but didn’t love it as I still have a few questions. Though available to read via an online reader copy.
The one thing that sets this apart from other stories is it is a prequel to the Percival de Rolo story. When I was watching the animated series, he became one of my favorite characters (Grog Strongjaw, is another). But as things went along, I really was looking for backstories and realized I probably wasn’t going to like him as we expended the story arcs (I have a habit of liking the Villain (especially if they are not always an obvious choice) or the one that turns out not to be a villain but isn’t a good/likable person). Also, I am attracted to the character who is into same gender relationships and I’m the wrong gender).
But this time we are focusing on the people that are part of de Rolo’s past and one in particular who he wants some serious revenge on. There is fantasy action, violence, and gun use. It is not for the sensitive reader, but also it is not anything we haven’t probably seen on tv or in other similar reads.
