The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook is the third book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series.
Review for book one Dungeon Crawler Carl Review for book two Carl’s Doomsday Scenario
Carl and Princess Donut have descended to the fourth level of the dungeon and into the Iron Tangle. An entire level that exists exclusively in subways but has trains of all types from steam engines to monorails. There is no map, there are colored lines (yes, zomp actually is a color) and named lines (like the Nightmare Express), trains don’t stop at all stops, and monsters are continually getting on and off the trains. Solve the puzzle of the train lines, defeat monsters, and find the stairs to descend to the 5th level. This shouldn’t be too hard, right? An added complication is that now there is a leader board and the top ten players have bounties on their heads. Carl and Princess Donut have been told to not trust anyone but that’s a tricky balance as it has become more apparent that the crawlers need to work together.
Complicating matters further is that intergalactic tensions and feuds are spilling over into the dungeon crawl. Governments and corporations are sponsoring players to manipulate the crawl and further their ends. It’s becoming apparent the Borant corporation running the dungeon has a political agenda that they are trying to push within the storylines this dungeon season. This book also reveals a new, behind the scenes power player that is operating to an unknown agenda which could have lasting ramifications beyond this season of Dungeon Crawler World.
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook continues to have hilarious and crazy exploits as Carl, Princess Donut, Mongo, and newcomer Katia work together trying to survive. But for Carl, it’s now about more than just survival. His anger at the dungeon, and the wider universe, has him waving the metaphorical middle finger in a desire to bring it all down.
Matt Dinniman’s creativity continues to amaze me. From Carl’s crazy ideas to the workings of the dungeon itself, I’m kept on the edge of my seat with excitement about what is going to happen next. If you like wildly imaginative and clever sci-fantasy this series is the one for you.
