Older books are just as good as a current book or a future publication book. Because, Hello … BOOK! Books are things we long for! Hope for! Need! Now, I am not sure if it fits the definition of saudade (a word that has no real direct to English translation, but basically means “an intense longing for something or someone.”)
What is saudade, is the mothers feeling in the story Saudade: Our Longing for Brazil, for the things she left behind in Brazil. Ana Crespo, also a Brazilian immigrant, shows us how this word can be both sweet and a bit bittersweet (or that is my interpretation). The mother and daughters relationship is one we all know (a deep, loving one), but due to the mothers background things are a little different. One of these differences is having the Brazilian Portuguese language come into play. The glossary helps with this, but also within the text you can understand meaning.
The illustrations are sweet and not overly detailed, but lack nothing. André Ceolin knows the subject and is caring with the representation. Everything blends in a way that is poetic without being poetry. It is a nice book that could work for one-on-one reading, for a classroom if learning differences about people, or just need a nice read. It might not work for everyone, but it has appeal for different people. It is just a nice book that might not become a classic, but will be a favorite read of you and the kiddo(s) in your life.
Saudade is currently available but I read via an online reader
