I do not think I have read Hugs Are (Not) for Everybody by Ella Russell and illustrated by Udayana Lugo, but I have read other books like this, so the theme is not new. However, it is well done and a good addition to the collection of learning boundaries. It is a simple, but not simplistic look at how “Hugs are for Everyone!” Until the all knowing narrator realizes that sometimes people like to wave or high five. You can celebrate with hugs or respect someone’s boundaries and celebrate with a good cake (of course, the nice part of that is hugs or no hugs, there will be CAKE!)
The idea is that there are all kinds of ways to celebrate and say hello and to enjoy your friends. It has bold colors, minimal details but does not lack in supporting the story. And as a sidebar there is a quick story about if it is true that magic tricks for everybody (or every bunny). This might not have been needed, but it is a good addition as it shows that people (and bunnies) are different and there can be a lot of different things we need to look at when we are with our friends, as hugs might not be the only boundary we must follow.
It is due in mid March 2025 and I read via an online reader copy, and I want to see the final result as this feels like a book that needs the final product to be in hand for full appreciation. And while I did not LOVE it, I appreciate and enjoy this sweet story and educational book.
