A while back I wrote a review for a couple of Chris Cate’s kids joke books. The following two are both due in September of 2025, one ready for the Christmas holidays and the other for the child in your life who likes jokes.
How to Make a Lion Laugh (How to Make Them Laugh) and Ho-Ho-Ho-Larious Christmas Jokes (How to Make Them Laugh) are two new joke books I read via an online reader copy. They are not the “WOW these are the best jokes ever” kind of jokes, but they have their moments and are good for the jokester in your life. Be you a kid who is the class chuckler, or the teacher who needs to get the attention of their classroom, or grandpa who wants to share his dad jokes but needs a little help in actually being funny… (no I’m not looking at you Grandpa C or S….you both were a hoot…!).
The Lion book did make me groan (and share those particular jokes as they were so bad they were good), but the Christmas one didn’t “do it” for me like it could have. For me, Winter and Christmas jokes rely on stretches too much, plus they have been overdone as last Christmas and this winter, I keep seeing the same five jokes over and over. Nothing is wrong with them, but they missed the mark with this reader. Also, the Christmas one does allow for multiple ages to read and/or be read too, so that helps. While the Lion book is aimed at the younger kids as it is heavy on the rhyming.
The covers give you what to expect for the illustrations with the color scheme and the amount of details that will be on each page. They are fun and cozy, good for kids and the kid in us.
