As an upper elementary school teacher, I’m always looking for books to suggest to my students. After hearing great things about author Alan Gratz, I knew I had to check out his books. The first book that I read by this author is Ground Zero.
This book tells the story of two different September 11ths. The first story is the one we all know to well- September 11, 2001. Brandon is 9 years old and is suspended from school; since his dad can’t leave him home alone, Brandon has to go to work with his dad at Windows on the World-on the 107th floor of the North Tower. After the terror attacks, Brandon is trapped in the North Tower and must find his way out.
The second story is September 11, 2019. This one takes place in Afghanistan and is told from the perspective of Reshmina. Reshmina is 11 years old and has a twin brother. She lives in a world where she can not touch any man/boy that is not a family member without permission. After she finds an injured American soldier, she must find a way to help without touch. She guides him to her home, which can be dangerous if the Taliban finds out that they are helping the enemy.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the different perspectives from two different September 11ths. While reading, I knew there had to be a larger connection to our two stories, other than the date they occurred. As I read, and made the connection, I thought it was a perfect way to tie everything together. I think anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction would enjoy this book.
