You know how sometimes the next book in the series isn’t as good as the one before it? Carl’s Doomsday Device does not fit in that category. It continues to be uproariously fun ala Carl having to remove all magic items and running around naked because even his boxers are magic. However, the questions continue to build. Why are some NPCs aware and others not? How mentally stable are the previous crawlers that become NPCs? What is going on in the broader universe that is impacting the dungeon?
Levels one and two were considered tutorials and now that the third level of the dungeon has opened up it’s time for crawlers to get serious. Carl and Princess Donut are able to choose new races and classes. Princess Donut remains a cat, obviously, why mess with perfection? Under the advice of Odette, she and Carl get sneaky about choosing a class. Also new to this level, quests. Quests can be a great way to get loot boxes but they can also distract a crawler from the grinding that they could be doing to level up. Naturally Carl and Princess Donut become ensnared. Will the potential rewards be worth the consequences?
SPOILERS if you haven’t read Dungeon Crawler Carl. Instead enjoy a picture of Cinna!
Isn’t Mongo the bestest boy? As soon as he was introduced in Dungeon Crawler Carl my little dinosaur loving heart went pitter pat as I guessed what he was based on his in game tag of mongoliensis. I love watching him level and learn to work with Princess Donut. Mongo’s guarding Princess Donut was so adorable! Also, watching her grow up is something I didn’t expect and the world is richer for it. The relationship between Carl and Princess Donut is the unexpected heart of this story. And I like Chekov’s gun, I can’t wait to find out how Carl eventually uses his doomsday device.
