I don’t know about you, but the cover of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is a bit misleading. Then, after you realize it is not just a cute story of a person planting trees, it becomes down right disturbing! I now know that the creator, Patrick Horvath is a very odd person (and I might not go onto other things they create) and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou had their hands full doing their part of things. Things are just warped. And I am not the only one who thinks this:
“Nothing can prepare you for this book. Holy sh*t.” – Tony Fleecs (Stray Dogs, Feral)
“Finally, murder and forensics are adorable!” – Patton Oswalt
Okay, I did not say adorable, but there are some PDC animals in this graphic novel. Just not the ones that get murdered and mutilated. While sometimes the gore felt for gore’s sake and not to move the story along, it does have a strong story plot around the horror/thriller. It is an emotional book that makes you think and wonder and no, you probably will not like anyone, but they are also hard not to admire in their fullness or lack thereof for personality. You know these people and are these people. They are the people of your neighborhood. There is no question what to expect from the people of the story, but they also have a few surprises.
The publisher’s description has this as Dexter meets Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy Town (and while I haven’t seen Dexter, I had this feeling, and yes, it is a very perverted Richard Scarry). There are horror images so needless to say, this is not for everyone, but it is something that will grab you and make you sleep with the lights on.
