For Christmas 2024 one of my gifts was a glass drink-jar from my nephew and his family. It is cute and great for the grand aunt of yesteryear. Except I’m more of a fun flower on a cool simple skull girl and not all pretty flowers. But it does have books and the saying There Is No Such Thing as too many books. And that I do agree with. And I also agree you can’t have too many online reader copies, you just need to balance work and reading.

One of those books I found was A Party for Florine: Florine Stettheimer and Me by Yevgenia Nayberg. Currently available, this book would be good for someone who is art centered. Adults are much of an audience as the aged five and up. While Florine Stettheimer might not be well known, she seems to be someone who we should know. The story is less biographical and more poetic love letter, but still brings in some facts. The narrator is a young girl who was exposed to the artist via a painting in a museum that she felt looked like her. They were both even artists! And in the style of Stettheimer, the story unfolds.
The illustrations are really the kicker for me. They are fun, bright, bold, busy but not crowded. Unless they are. They compliment the text, but also become a character all their own. I did a little Wikipedia research to find more information about the artist (though there are a few extras at the end) and realized I think if that glass drink-jar had a painting from Stettheimer, it would be up my alley. Then again, how many nudes of Stettheimer does one need?
In the end, this book did what it was supposed to do. It entertained me and made me curious about the artist. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art, artists, women artists, or unknown artists.
The images used are a mixture of the author/book and artists works.
