A few years ago, I reviewed the first one of this trilogy (Nevermore), but I never got around to reviewing the rest. Since I reread them recently, just for fun, I decided that now was as good a time as any to review them.
*SPOILERS FOR NEVERMORE*
Morrigan Crow has defeated her curse and become a member of the Wundrous Society. However, while she is hoping for an education with imagination, discovery, wunder, and learning about her powers, she just gets taught about how horrible and evil Wundersmiths are. Then, someone starts blackmailing Morrigan’s unit and turning her friends against her. Even worse, people start to go missing and Nevermore becomes riddled with fear and suspicion.
Overall, although it wasn’t as good as the first one, I still really enjoyed this book. It captured the same essence as the first without being so similar that it was redundant. I generally just enjoyed it and would recommend. The plot was still interesting and it was riddled with mystery and discovery.
In Hollowpox, Morrigan has survived her first year as a member of Unit 919, but a mysterious disease is plaguing Nevermore, turning Wunimals (animals with conscious thought and actions similar to humans) into Unimals (pretty much just regular animals). The victims multiply, panic spreads, and Morrigan realizes that she needs to be the one to find a cure, even if it puts her in danger.
Similar to the second book, this one was a good blend of the previous books, while still being its own thing. It helped to deepen the complexities of this world, while still being related to the first two. I generally liked this one more than the second, but still less than the first just because I found the plot more interesting.
In general, both of these books were worthy sequels and pretty much just good books.
