I first found Urban Tails by Ilana Zeffren as an online reader copy, though the book has been available since May 2022. I was having trouble reading it online due to the illustrations. The text bled into the images. The colors were dull and this made things feel unfinished overall. The story wasn’t engaging me. But there was something about it that made me want to read it. I knew there was something there. Perhaps it was because it was about Israel. Or because there were two talking cats, but whatever it was, I was able to locate it via an interlibrary loan from the local library.
Everyday events and not so everyday events, are woven together to make an interesting look at life as a Lesbian-Cat-Mom-Cartoonist in Israel. Seeing the ups and downs of money woes, the “needing a man” moments, owning multiple cats, trying to find jobs, fight the good fight with politics, and saving your home from an army of ants come alive in one or two page comics that actually temper the seriousness of things with some dry (and not so dry) humor. The style of the illustrations sets the tone of things. Not only is it relatable as an adult reader trying to make ends meet, it is also a nice introduction to the politics of the time and nation. However, if you do not like talking cat moments, you might not like it, but I felt it actually enhances the points.
The themes of things could be happening today, but are set in the early to mid 2000’s. It is a comical take on serious things that once you get into it, you realize the illustrations are there to show you the author’s style and sets the tone. Neither real or abstract, they complement the story. You get some history and culture of the area, some of the biases and how this family tries to organize it all. I’m sure you will find yourself in one, or more of the characters.
Some mature situations/themes so not for all readers.
