After a couple of more edgier titles, and a biography/memoir of Andy Warhol, I wanted something light to read. I found in my online reader copies Travis Daventhorpe Powers Up! by Wes Molebash. This is the second book in the series. Since both volumes are currently available, I recommend reading them as closely together as possible, as there were several pieces I had forgotten about book one. Besides, it is fun to see how they pick up where we left off in book one.
All the characters from book one are there, Travis and his birthmarked hand; Bela, the wizard from another dimension, his friend Juniper, and his old foe. Of course the villains are there, too, plus some surprises and a bit of humor as well. Set up as a coming-of-age story and blocked like a video game, this younger graphic novel is fast paced and fun. The illustrations are bold, colorful, simple, and fun. They help push the story forward, allowing for the humor to come out. The art and text are easy and allow you to move quickly through the journey of our heroes.
Mixing faith and science, things take a little different turn of events, but nothing is heavy handed. There is a THE END section, but don’t stop there, as there (like a good Marvel movie) more goodies at the end of things. If you like the Hilo series by Judd Winick, Ghost Patrol by Andres Miedoso or Doom’s Day Camp by Joshua Hauke, and/or stories about friendship and superheroes, this could be another one to try.
