I was looking to see what author Leslie Barnard Booth had on their list of titles after A Stone Is a Story. And there were a few titles. The one that caught my eye was One Day This Tree Will Fall. It looked like their stone book, and therefore I figured it would be similar. And it was similar, and not just because it was about nature or I read it as an online reader copy even though it is available for purchase/getting.
It is similar with the poetic text and the lush illustrations that are earthy and colorful, without being overwhelming. And even the information about trees and what is told about in the main story is there at the end. This time our story is about a tree (from a small seed, that had to face many dangers) to the day another seed finds its way to the first tree. This unfolds at a medium pace and is more solid and is slightly less fluid than the other title, but still is artistly presented. The biggest difference is that the facts are more obviously placed within this story, but still it keeps the flow of a fiction story and the poetic tone.
Between Stephanie Fizer Coleman’s illustrations and Booth’s text, this book comes to life in a way that the stone book didn’t for me. I have read books about trees before (both factual and fun) and I still learned a few new things, while supporting what I knew. This book works great for the nature lover, someone that is being introduced to it, but also is a bit older. It works in the classroom and one-on-one.
