When Amelia impulsively claims to have a boyfriend, it’s only to get her nagging family off her back. But when they demand she produce him for a cousin’s upcoming wedding festivities, Amelia enlists the strange but charming Reggie as a fake date, quite unaware that he is in fact a vampire.
This is the second book in the My Vampires series, in which vampires with a confused understanding of humanity and modern times meet classic romcom female leads, which much humor ensuing. While the first book didn’t deliver as I’d hoped, this second does a much better job of filling the brief.
Amelia is your stereotypical straight-laced accountant, but she really picks her complete opposite for a fake date – freewheeling Reggie, whose adventures with bullet journaling and Discord offered plenty of diversion. With such a serious woman and such a laidback man as leads, the author could have risked having one look down on the other, but instead walks the tightrope of admiring the other’s outlook on life while still realizing it’s not for them.
Add the humor that results from how bad an understanding of the IRS that the average vampire has, as well as Amelia’s understanding of Reggie’s sense of humor, and I had plenty of fun. Who knew tax codes could save the day? I also appreciated getting more of an understanding of vampire society.
I did think though that the ending got a bit rushed, especially with the resolution of whatever was going on with the centuries’ old fire. I expect it would come out in a future book (featuring perhaps, a witch?), but in the meanwhile it does mean that this big mystery that had been causing Reggie all his issues just gets passed into as of yet unknown hands, and with it the chance to learn about what exactly was up with the vampire sires.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
