Just in time for the Halloween season (or more accurately, late summer 2025), My Brother’s Butt Is Haunted by Dan Poblocki and illustrated by James Rey Sanchez will be out. Hopefully. I mean someone could raise a stink and say it is inappropriate, it is a real foul bomb or something. I mean, many people will think this is a gas, but you know people can sometimes not get into the spirit of things.
When two brothers go to spend the night together at their grandparents’ new house (which is actually an old house that looks like it could be a place where monsters live and neighbors say is haunted) things take a spooky twist. When one brother has a gastrointestinal issues, they assume the worst: Zombies! Graves! Possession! The boys, being young boys, are soon convinced that sounds and smells they are experiencing are …. .a HAUNTED BUTT!
Leave it to a couple of kids to get their patooties scared off because of a little…. Well, I won’t spoil the surprise.
What is no surprise is that there is a lot of ghostly green coming from the boys (rear) ends. Or at least one boy, and the other is the one that figures out the haunting because of that green color. And what also is not a surprise is the toot and butt jokes. It is a typical situation that is illustrated by computer looking images that are colorful and not overly detailed, but have a decent amount of them. No, I am not thinking this is THE BEST EVER but it is fun, the right offbeat set of humor will work best, and that does allow for a multitude of ages. The picture book format will probably turn off a few older readers, but they would be able to read themselves or with some help.
When all was said and done, I felt that this read via an online reader copy book, is a younger Walter the Farting Dog meets brother/friendship story.
