While Gaytheist: Coming Out of My Orthodox Childhood by Lonnie Mann and Ryan Gatts is currently available, I read via an online reader. Which is actually good, as I am not sure I personally want to have a copy. However, this graphic novel is one that is needed for more than one person, I’m sure, as I am sure Lonnie is not the only person who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family as a gay person.
I’m actually giving this more of a 3.5 to 3.9 as I was hoping for a deeper look into the religion itself, as I am unfamiliar with the religion and its practices. Plus, the illustrations could have been more detailed for my own personal tastes. However, it is a good introduction to one person’s experiences. It is about a personal journey and each reader will have their own personal experience reading. I found it a very enjoyable read, even with the difficulties presented.
I found this an emotional story. Mann will later say that the Orthodox community has a cult basis and he shows this throughout the story. That is not to say that the culture is wrong, however, as it seems to be comforting to many. That crisis of faith becomes an interesting point to the overall development of things. It would really be a good discussion point, as Mann also says why can’t he and another friend be happy for friends who became more devout? Overall, this book, even if you are not in the GLBTQ community, Orthodox, or religious, should probably find itself on your reading pile.
