Either the celebrities are getting younger, or I’m getting older (I’m assuming the former, as I’m certainly not getting older….). Joking aside, the first few sections of Beyond They/Them: 20 Influential Nonbinary and Gender-Diverse People You Should Know focuses on young people born in the 1990s mostly, so I was a bit surprised how young the people were. Then again, we are just starting to have nonbinary and/or trans people in literature and/or mainstream, making the pioneers younger. And Em Dickson and Cameron Mukwa proudly tell the stories of their subjects on the pages of their due in May 2025 non-fiction book for young adults.
The categories of Film & TV, Books & Poetry, plus Music were the sections I read before starting my review. They range from people you might know (Sam Smith, music) to others you might not (Vico Ortiz, film & tv). But each one has made an important contribution to these two fields. We learn how people journey to find themselves in literature, express their gender expression via clothing and makeup, and also how they contribute to making others visible by using their platforms for equality for others.
Each section (books & poetry, music, sports, politics, activists & scholars) has a few people that each have a few pages dedicated to talking about them, their pronouns (at the time of the writing of the book) , their quotes, awards, contributions, and more. I am looking forward to reading about Jaiyah Saelua (sports, which I started after starting this review), who is a third-gender Polynesian soccer player. So far, I have only known a few people, but again, excited to learn more about them. I’ve skipped a few people, but the variety is interesting. This is a nice solid book, that’s not “OMG BEST” but it is a book that is important and a decent introduction. The cover gives you an idea of how the illustrations play out. For me, they were neither wow or unwow, just nice. They get the job done, they are colorful and have needed details
I read via an online reader copy. However, I plan on getting a copy or two to donate to my former high school and local library when it comes out.
