A Stone Is a Story by Leslie Barnard Booth and Marc Martin is a picture book about how a “stone” is formed. But it is not done with dry facts, but with a more poetic nature. We follow from before time (almost) to today and “you” the reader finding a piece of that original item.
I did not find things WOW, but I did find them enjoyable. If you are looking for a factual book, this does have that at the end, but within the story itself, it does not give pure facts, but in a more dreamy way, gives some of that. It is a cozy story that just is and you can sit, relax and follow the flow. It makes a good read aloud because of this. And with the addition of the facts, it can allow growth with the reader, and hit different areas of interest. The illustrations are what made the book for me. They follow the more poetic flow of the story and text. They are earthy and colorful, but not overly bright or bold, but not muted. It is a soft and solid combination of color, details and using them to complement and become their own character.
Overall, it is a good, nice book. I am not screaming “best book ever,” but I recommend it, enjoy it, and might borrow from the library. I did read it via an online reader copy, though it is currently available to purchase or borrow. I think it might not become a classic, but it is one that you and your child will have found memories of.
