(Since this is a sequel, there will be spoilers for the end of Book 1 in here)
My review of the first book was titled “Better Than Fourth Wing,” and this one was miles better than Book 1, so I guess maybe I actually liked this one?
So Feyre has conquered Amarantha, rescued Tamlin and the rest of the Fae, and is now back in the Spring Court trying to reconcile all of this good news with the very, very bad things she had to do to get here. Meanwhile Tamlin is back to his usual self, keeping secrets, refusing to let Feyre do anything useful, and basically just kind of being an ass. Rhysand, the High Lord of the Night Court (and I really feel like Sarah J Maas should have chosen a better name for it than Night Court), starts cashing in on his bargain with Feyre that they made while Under the Mountain, and makes her spend one week of each month with him. Eventually some Bad Stuff happens and Feyre leaves the Spring Court, taking refuge with Rhys, and this is where the story really takes off.
I am still surprised to report that I liked this book, because I really didn’t expect to. Book 1 was fine but kind of boring, and I only picked up book 2 because so many people said it was much better than 1. They were right! Of course, there are still plenty of places where it drags–there’s a dinner that takes place maybe halfway through the book which is just a bunch of faeries sitting around talking about their childhoods, and good lord was that boring–but the plot in general was much more exciting than Book 1, and Rhys is really a great character. I doubt I’ll keep going with this series–it seems like people talk about Book 2 as the high point, and while I liked it I don’t know that I liked it enough to keep reading if the rest of the series isn’t as good.
