Time for the other series that will give you more goosebumps!
Ready for a Scare? The Graphic Novel Volume 3: You’re Invited to a Creepover by P.J. Night and illustrated by Glass House Graphics is for the Goosebump books lover who also likes graphic novels. Or for the reader who wants something “creepy” but is not ready for something like Five Nights of Freddy or an older read. Things can be a smidgen spooky (after all there are over the computer seances, the death of someone, zombie-like actions and think “Bloody Mary” only it’s “Miss Mary”), but overall it is not a horror book, but you will scream…. with delight.
I know Halloween is over with (at least for 2024 it is) but a fun, old fashioned, ghost thriller can be read anytime. One of the fun things about this book (and the first two that I’ve read so far) is that there is a “gottcha moment” that makes you wonder if things are actually magically happening or have logical explanations. While ages 8 to 10-12 can read, it does not really have anything “too much” to the “scary” but do know your reader as there are a few moments that could be a bit tense for the sensitive reader.
The illustrations are minimalist, with deep colors. They set the mood for a spooky setting. Things are not graphic and actually the scenery changes very little. We have the kitchen, bedroom and living room and for a short time the outside. They compliment the text, but honestly, without them, the story would not be any different. They do the job.
And this same format happens with You’re Invited to a Creepover V04 The Show Must Go On! the Graphic Novel. Only this time our theme is about the theater, the great white way stage (or more like sixth grade middle school stage). No nobody mentioned the Scottish play, but it is as bad, as the last time the play was performed (a really long time ago. You know, the 1990s) a girl died. And it looks like history wants to repeat itself. Bree and her friends, frenemies and possibly a ghost or two, need to stop the curse or it will be lights out and curtain down forever. This one does lean a bit into the supernatural in a more pleasant way (after all the spook gets out of the way) but still it is thriller and chiller time.
And if you liked the series so far, go onto You’re Invited to a Creepover V05 There’s Something Out There the Graphic Novel (which brings in some fun local lore and cryptids) and You’re Invited to a Creepover V06 Best Friends Forever the Graphic Novel (which shows how maybe sometimes we are too old to play with dolls and the term, BFF can mean a really really long time… but at least there is candy). All were read via an online reader copy, but only all are available in a finished format. These are also based on novels from the mid 2000’s teens.
