CBR 16 Bingo – Cult: The main character’s sister joined a cult, and the main character is trying to reconnect with said sister.
Lo Denham and her sister Bea were close, until their parents died in a car accident and Bea left to join a mysterious cult called The Unity Project. Now, 6 years later, Lo has been trying for years to reconnect with her sister, unsuccessfully, until she gets the perfect opportunity. However, it is clear that Bea doesn’t want to be found, so Lo struggles to find her and ends up roped into the world of The Unity Project.
I picked up this book because I loved Sadie by Courtney Summers, and I wanted more so I figured I’d see what else she had written. I will say, especially after having read Sadie, this book kind of disappointed. It was a lot more predictable, the writing wasn’t as good, and I didn’t like Lo as a character. I found her to be kind of stuck-up, self centered, and ungrateful. Also, in general, the plot wasn’t as good as Sadie.
It was interesting to learn the backstory as you went along, since chapters switched between past and present, but, as a whole, the book was just alright. I found it kind of confusing in some parts, and, overall, it just wasn’t great, especially when compared to other books by Courtney Summers. It definitely wasn’t my favorite and it left more to be desired, but I have definitely read worse. I don’t know if I over hyped it for myself or if it just wasn’t great, but I found it to be solidly mediocre, at best.
