CBR 16 Bingo – Golden: Money, wealth, literal gold.
This 4th instalment in what I assumed would stay a trilogy was unexpected, but I wasn’t disappointed by its existence. It focuses more on Grayson and Jameson than Avery, and it was nice to learn more about them. Grayson and Jameson have both gone away from home, but for different reasons. Grayson leaves to help protect his half-sisters, whereas Jameson goes to seek thrills and play a game.
This book was pretty good, but probably my least favorite of the series. To me, it was interesting, but felt somewhat unnecessary. I felt like the ending of The Final Gambit was satisfactory and I didn’t really need more. However, I feel like if there had to be another book, this was a good one. Instead of trying to build off the plot of the completed trilogy, of create a new plot centered around Avery that didn’t really work, it included characters from the original trilogy, including Avery, but it centered more around Grayson and Jameson. It was interesting to learn more about the characters and their relationships.
Overall, it was pretty good, if not a little unnecessary. It was well done, the writing style was still on point, and the characters were still great. The puzzles were still interesting, but I didn’t think they were as good as in the original trilogy. 3.75 stars, it was pretty enjoyable, however it was a much slower read than any of the rest of the series for some reason. I think it was because of the puzzles and how there was much less mystery, but it might have also been that it just wasn’t really needed. However, it was still well done.
