I started with Sea of Thieves: Sea Dog’s Search illustrated by Rhoald Marcellius. Though it says it has issues one to three, it was actually
after the no added title, Sea of Thieves. We meet our main pirate twins, their friends, frenemies and a possible lover or two or three…. Here we build up the story of all the characters we find in the second book (or the main ones) and we learn about a few creatures and events. However, you needed Sea of Thieves: Origins Volume One and Sea of Thieves: Origins: Champion of Souls as well. While each book does hold its own, the characters will overlap, or certain elements are introduced that will overlap.
The themes are magical, but also are realistic as some characters are from such places as France and Portugal. There are a few diverse characters, gender is explored, gender roles/power explored, some LGBTQ situations, smart characters, really dumb characters, skeletons walking about, several ghosts and no Dramamine in sight. The stories are based on the game of the same name, but you do not need to know that exactly. It probably wouldn’t hurt, but I had no trouble figuring it out.
The art is traditional comic illustrations, therefore, they are busy, colorful and crowded. They paint a picture, but mostly all islands look the same, taverns all have the ale flowing and wenches are wenching while pirates are pirating. Or looking into skulls for the future. I do not dislike this series by any means, but I think I’ve caught up and if there are more, I won’t go on. Same with another series that looks okay, but I won’t start it. However, I will pick up a few of the My Little Ponies tails… um tales, plus Navigating with You (avialable) and The Dashing School for Wayward Princes when it comes out Fall 2025.
