CBR 16 Bingo – Fanfic: I really struggled to find something I actually wanted to read for this category, but I finally found it. You might argue that this isn’t fanfiction, but it meets the definition so what can you do. It’s an adaptation of the original story written by an appreciator of the works. I don’t see the problem.
You know a book is going to be good when it has a quote this spectacular.
“The wolf said, ‘You know, my dear, it isn’t safe for a little girl to walk through these woods alone.’
Red Riding Hood said, ‘I find your sexist remark offensive in the extreme, but I will ignore it because of your traditional status as an outcast from society, the stress of which has caused you to develop your own, entirely valid, worldview. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must be on my way.'”
The book is a collection of classic fairy tales including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, Rapunzel, etc., adapted to be politically correct in the modern world. This concept, when explained like that, seems boring. In reality, the book is far from boring. It’s really witty and funny, and is a great modern twist on the classic stories.
“Now that I have done my work, you must fulfill your part of the bargain. You must give me your first-born child!”
Esmeralda shot back at him, “I don’t have to negotiate with anyone who would interfere with my reproductive rights!”
The book is so amusing, so quotable, and simply a very enjoyable read that puts a smile on your face. In its effort to be completely unbiased and politically correct, it changes things nobody would have thought of in a funny way, like calling Rumplestiltskin “vertically challenged,” or having Goldilocks be a biologist specializing in the study of anthropomorphic bears, so she has reason to be stalking and breaking into the house of the bears.
This was great book that was remarkably witty and amusing, and I would strongly recommend it.
