My Name is Jem: a tale of a guide dog superstar is a delightful introduction to the subject of a guide/service dog. In a child friendly (but slightly “talk down” to adults at times), and through the eyes of Jem themselves, we see the things a guide/service dog does. Such as how they help their handler or how they became a guide dog and so forth. We also learn that a dog, regardless of their job, is a dog and likes downtime, playtime, pets and being told they are “a good girl”. However, Olivia Muscat also tells us that you cannot do this willy-nilly or without permission as this will distract the dog and their handler could find themselves in a dangerous situation.
The artwork, however, was not as big of a hit for me. But it is a nice touch for the right audience. Allison Colpoys has a simple look that includes simple colors and details. The cover is a good indication of the inside illustrations. But if you enjoy them, Colpoys has several other books that continue in this same pastel, bright but not over the top, fun.
The biggest issue I have with this picture book is that it is due early June 2025. I was lucky enough to read it via an online reader copy, but its publication date means you will have to wait. However, it will be a good book if your child will have a person with a service dog in their classroom come fall.
