The nice thing about working with people that read books, too, is that sometimes they read something, like it, and review it for our website. And to make sure the rest of us know that a person is promoting book X, (so we can read it ourselves, or more accurately, recommend it to customers) we get an email pertaining to those books. This is how I found Millie Fleur Saves the Night by Christy Mandin. It is the companion to Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden. Now the only really bad thing about this book is that it is not due until Summer 2025!
I was able to find an online reader copy, but I do recommend going to your independent bookstore and preorder copies as it is worth the wait. Or, if you have not read the first book, to go and find copies of Millie Feur’s Poison Garden, as though you don’t have to read it, it does help you understand where these characters have come from, how far they have come and how far they have to go.
The small issue I had with the book is that, while this is a lovely story, the concept has been done before (being different and changes). Also, the first book took that theme of differences and
change and created a stronger result. This second book is a smidgen flat. It tries to capture the fun of before, but slightly misses the mark. However, it is still a good book. It has illustrations that are adorable (there is a possum that I want to hug, not to mention the bat) and they are fun. The neighborhood is afraid of the Dark, so Millie shows how the dark is her friend. And that the dark is shy, but she wants to be friends with them. And this is shown by making The Dark a creature that is solid, and has the look of being the darkness around us.
It is a must to add to your collection of picture books and/or with Mandin’s first book of Millie
