CBR 16 Bingo – Fiasco: This book itself was a fiasco. It’s the sequel to a great book that deserved a great sequel, not one that was neither entertaining nor engaging, hence me deming it a fiasco.
I had high hopes going into this book. I picked it up immediately after Divergent because I wanted more of the characters and world, and I wanted to know what happened next, but this book did not satisfy that. I didn’t learn what happened next, because it was practically all world building on loop.
It’s hard to summarize this book without spoiling Divergent, but all I’ll say is that, on Tris’s initiation day, war begins, so, after fighting a bit, Tris, Four, and a few other of their friends run away to a different faction, something happens, they leave to a different faction, something happens, etc. We got a whole world tour when instead we wanted continuation of the plot. It got slightly better towards the end, but the majority of the book was really repetitive, not engaging, and not what I would want out of the sequel to a great book.
I was told that the 3rd book in the trilogy is better, but I couldn’t bring myself to read it after having such a bad experience with the 2nd. Maybe I’ll finish the series eventually, but, for now, I just need some time to recover from the major disappointment that came with this book. I understand that a sequel will rarely be as good as the 1st book, but, for it to be so bad that I didn’t finish the series, I feel like we would be better off without it. 2 stars because it was decent at the start and the end, but the middle ruined it for me.
