CBR 16 Bingo – Dreams: Tara dreamed of an education, and then fulfilled those dreams.
“Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind.”
We selected this book one month last year for my book club, but I didn’t end up reading it then because I was insanely busy that month and simply didn’t have the time. I was interested in reading it before the book club, and all my friends in the book club recommended it, so I recently read it.
It tells the story of the author and her journey towards an education. She grew up in a survivalist Mormon household in rural Idaho, where her father didn’t believe in the government, education, healthcare, etc. Thus, she was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. However, when she was young, Tara began to educate herself through books, and music. Also, once she started getting a proper education, she didn’t stop and ended up traveling the world in seek of knowledge, attending Harvard and Cambridge.
This book was phenomenal. While it was kind of slow to read, it was so well-written and interesting that I was never bored while reading it. Instead, I was constantly engaged with the storyline, and amazed by the fact that this was a true story. 4.5 stars, this was a great book and I would encourage everyone to read it. Simply incredible.
