You might have read my review of Dear Duck, Please Come! by Sarah MacKenzie and Charles Santoso and learned that I was trying to read Because Barbara: Barbara Cooney Paints Her World by Sarah MacKenzie and illustrated by Eileen Ryan Ewen instead, but a mix up with the online link brought me to the duck book. It was a nice surprise, but I still wanted to read about Cooney and was eventually able to locate another online link to the book. Therefore, I was able to finally read MacKenzie’s picture book.
This is a sweet picture book with soft and boldly colored illustrations. The text is busy, but straightforward, yet also also slightly poetic and everything together captures the spirit of Cooney. We do a quick biography of the myth, the legend, the actual woman. The highlights are covered, allowing you to go onto some of the books MacKezie used in their research. There are other extras, photographs and more at the end of the picture book as well. It is a nice introduction to things that gives a good overall view of things.
Overall it is a nice story that could be about any person who was an artist and had a heart for adventure, but just happens to be about one of the most favorite illustrators of many peoples lives. Therefore, this book is just as much for the adults as it is for the children readers (or listeners). It is pleasant to read silently or together. It might work well for the classroom if you are learning about authors, illustrations or famous women.
