The story behind Twig by Skottie Young and Kyle Strahm is almost as interesting as the book itself. I have tried for about two years now to read it. I have had a few online reader copies, tried to order it, and other reasons kept piling up as to why I was unable to read. Finally I said, “Hello Library? Could you PLEASE get this book for me?” And they did! And I am glad I waited. I know that at the time of release, I don’t think I would have been able to really enjoy things. And I was glad that all that buildup did not sour the enjoyment either (I actually had realistic expectations on it).
Twigs story is simple enough, he is chosen to replace his father as a person who places the gems mined by others in the right place to help save the world. The adventures getting there is how we see that even an odd looking blue critter who loves cooking can be a hero. Young created a cute story about the end of the world. Maybe it is not the most original theme or take on the subject, but overall there were nice characters (except the bad guys; who are really bad). And it has a good message about the strength within ourselves being the true weapon.
It is marketed to adults, but strong teens (at least 13 and up) could be okay. There is fantasy action, violence, and a bit of thriller/horror. Even though the art is “cute” and traditional comic/graphic novel looking, it can be a smidgen dark at times. And teeth! There are a lot of sharp, chompy teeth!
