The Secret Lives of Candy Hearts by Tommy Siegel is a solid 3.5. It is not WOW or original (the themes have been done before) but the way they are presented is fun. And a little creepy (the giant Candy Heart heads on Han Solo and the Storm Trooper was off putting, but amusing).
Things are totally adult (at least PG-14 due to subjects, including drug use/commentary) and it is quirky. The illustrations can be a hit and miss for me (yes Han Solo your look was odd, but the commentary potent). Some images feel they are gratuitous and others work really well for what Siegel is trying to go for. However, the concepts are relatable (sexy shower time? Not so much). And they include other things that most of us go through almost everyday: commitment, cohabitation, family dynamics, pets, dating apps, and wedding planning.
This is what we call “in the biz” a “counter book.” One of those fun “stocking stuffer” like books you find at the checkout counter of your favorite independent bookstore. They are fun for yourself, great as a not so serious birthday gift for the person who has it all, and even could be used for your college graduate. It is an anytime read that would look great on your bedside table or coffee table. I am assuming it is going to be smaller, so it is not a “pure” coffee table book, but that would make it even more fun to have one small book on a larger table. It would fit the atmosphere of the book perfectly.
According to the publisher’s description, some of the comics included have never (before) been seen in print or online. Which I find a little amusing as I do not think I had heard of them before I found the online reader. The final copy is due January 2025.
