Sea of Thieves: Sea Dog’s Search by Jeremy Whitley and illustrated by Rhoald Marcellius is more of a 2.5 than a 2. That is not to say this graphic novel is not good, in fact, it is a lot of fun. But nothing “grabbed” me into saying “Best book.” We know the stories of female pirates proving themselves to their families and self, and the illustrations are in a traditional comic format.
However, if I had known about the podcasts, shows, and the other items included in this series, it would have probably helped. Also, if I had read the books that came before this as there is a lot of “new stuff” but it relies on you knowing past stuff. This reads as a D&D like story, but without the tabletop game composites. It reminded me of Vox Machina with its style and off-beat humor. There are some nice modern gender topics (SPOILER) as one character is a trans man who has a very hot, dangerous, witty wife; and I am wondering if the main character is ace or demisexual. The outfits of the females lean towards the “sexy” and there is fantasy action. So far though things are a bit less mature than other things like this, but it is still for older readers (at least a strong 12 and up, but more likely 14 and up) and it is marketed to adults.
The story itself is pretty straightforward: our heroes (or lets say Pirates, because that is what they are and not really nice people. Though they do have some niiiiice scars going on in variously interesting places) go about finding the soul of an old crew mate and the captain’s twin brother. Then we bounce from one thing to the next. Sometimes it felt like I missed something or they did not completely fleshed things out. Still, it was a fun, quick read. I have picked up another book and trying to figure out where it goes in the series. I think if I had some more background about any game or as said, podcasts, it would be best, but if you’re looking for something fun and quick, it does the job.
