Due to recent world events, I have tried to find books that show another side to the people involved in these conflicts. In my search I have found several books, including an Ukrainian folktale, such as a counting book from Palestine and books on Judaism or the people. And one of those that I recently found was, On a Chariot of Fire: The Story of India’s Bene Israel by Erica Lyons, (currently available, read via an online reader).
I cannot say a lot about the book, without giving much away, but will say that this book is an eye opening story about a special holiday in the Jewish faith. But not necessarily one that is worldwide celebrated. As it is about the Bene Israel people of India and their unique story of how they came to be. It tells how the cultures would mix and events that lead to the celebration. There are also extras that add to the amazing learning experience. It never occurred to me that Jewish peoples would live within the Indian country. And to see myth and history interwoven was an experience I was glad to have, even if only on the pages of Lyons book.
But as interesting as the book was, for me it was the illustrations by Siona Benjamin that really need to be written about. They are delightfully creative. Perhaps a bit romantic and lofty, but several religious books go for that “moreness” when illustrating the story. Colors and details are popping off the page giving a lot of emotion and feelings to what is going on. Seeing the Jewish and Indian cultures combined allows us to see history that we probably are not aware of.
The text and subject do make this for older children (at least five and up), but really anyone could enjoy it. I know of several adult friends who would like it, and I am thinking of donating copies to my local libraries.
