I read the graphic novel Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass. I had wanted to read the novel first, but never got around to it. But I found the graphic novel, read it and then found the novel version. And having read the graphic novel first, it was hard not to compare the two, but I tried not to. However, there is a large difference between the two. While the graphic novel has a “today” feeling (21st century) there is a less modern feeling to the novel (both by Meg Medina). The character of Piddy in the graphic novel feels as if she has more control over her self-esteem and worth, compared to the novel. We have more of her mother who seems to be more fearful, and therefore, not as “matronly” as she “should” be. And the best friend of the mother is not as “Girl Boss” and has a bit more of a submissive feeling than she does in the graphic novel. Still both deal with the theme well and overall it felt like I was reading the graphic novel again.
I am sorry to say that Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass is as topical as it was over a decade ago. Meg Medina was responding to events that were becoming more out in the open. Medina went out and wrote a book about the subject of bullying, self-worth, fear, sexuality and coming of age and in a way that was relatable to many. The setting and characters have personalities that make you want to know more. Who are the people being bullied? Who are the bullies? Why are the mothers like this or that? Why are apartment buildings the way they are? Why is the community helpful or not? Why is the school acting the way it is?
I recommend reading both (perhaps read the novel first). The changes of then and now are many, but still people are people no matter when and where. Some Triggers due to violence, language and content.
