The autumn season is upon those of us in those regions. We get to have cool nights, crisp days, wind, rain, sun and sometimes within a 15 minute time frame! And there are changing colors of the leaves, crazy squirrels and the thought of pumpkins. And in this review we learn about the pumpkin in a way that allows us not to be scientifically bombarded with just the facts.
When you read a book and the title (The Pumpkin Seed’s Secret: A Life Cycle Poem) tells you the story, one might wonder if it will be good. I mean, we know the plot right? Well, these are poems, not a “real story” and yet, you get a book that is set up almost as a story. And when it says “life cycle” how could it be good? I can’t imagine a pumpkin is very exciting. Yet, these sweet poems (and a plethora of extras and even a recipe) give us the joys of the Pumpkin in ways that are clever and keep you reading along. From a seed to being planted to the final result and debuting as a pumpkin, we find many things and wonders on the pages.
Author Hannah Barnaby and illustrator Cédric Abt, really know their stuff and allow their readers to have fun while learning. Aimed at a younger reader, anyone can have a good time. This is accented with sweet, simple, but not lacking in punch illustrations. Maybe they are not flashy, but this lets the reader take their time without being overwhelmed.
