I read Percy Jackson & The Olympians book 1- The Lightning Thief at the same time my son and I watched the series on Disney + and we really liked them both. He’s not done with the book but he has other books he’s reading first so that’s fine. There are a few differences between the two but the basic plot of the tv series and the book are the same. It’s fun to see the “shocking betrayal” through your kid’s eyes when you can see it obviously coming. I’ll be interested to see if he wants to keep reading them. I went and checked out the second book from the library right away.
So Percy and his mother live with this terrible guy who is not Percy’s father but drinks and plays online poker all day. They end up going up to a beach house where a minotaur attacks his mother and she crumbles into pieces and it is revealed that his best friend Grover is a satyr. Also his teacher at school is a centaur named Chiron. Percy is a demigod, a child of Poseidon, and attends Camp Half-Blood for fellow demigods.
So this is the background book, where the world is explained, the situation is set up where Annabeth, introduced at camp and the daughter of Athena, Grover and Percy set out on a quest to return Zeus’s lightning bolt which has been stolen by one of the gods. Hades is the prime suspect, and it comes out at camp that his mother is alive and a prisoner of Hades. The thing that I appreciated the most about this book is Percy is completely in over his head when dealing with the gods. Sure, he has abilities that manifest when he is near or in water, but he cannot compete with gods that go up against him. It’s only the quick thinking of Percy and his friends that help him get by. Anyway I liked it and it’s fun to have a book that Gabe and I can both read and talk about.
