Have you ever played a Dungeons & Dragons game or a D&D like game? Have you had envy and/or jealousy of a friend’s friend/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner? Are you not a fan of change; even good changes? Are you queer? Do you like comics/graphic novels? Do you like stories about things like that in graphic novel format? Then this is the book for you.
For the most part, in The Last Session Vol. 1 by Jasmine Walls, Dozerdraws (Illustrator), and Micah Myers (Letterer), the story is familiar. The names have been changed from those other books, and some people are focused on more than others but you know about being queer, coming out, dealing with friendship issues, and when new things happen. Like the girlfriend of your best friend being added to the roleplaying game you started in high school and are now (after college/big changes) are trying to finish. And the illustrations are familiar with their classic smooth, silky graphic novel images. The cover gives you a bit of the colors, but some panels are very detailed where others are more minimalistic.
We get the gambit of queer types (they/them; maybe asexual or aromantic; gay; and maybe trans) and the friendship story. There is not anything new, but that is fine. It is a nice read that allows you to know pretty much where things are going, no surprises, and you can just read and enjoy. No heavy lifting needed. I would have liked to have known more about each character, but maybe that is for future volumes. If there are any! I am unable to locate them, so if anyone knows of them please let me know!
However, the nice thing is this volume is contained so you do not need to go on. And with the switching between “four years prior and now” you can pick up a few things that will help with the “now” story parts.
