Book one of the Your Pal Fred series opens with Fred waking after (I forget how many) centuries to a dystopian earth. He is a friendship robot who on the perky scale makes Sandy Duncan and Mr. Rogers look like grumps. And in his very special way (being kind, talking things out, staring contests, etc) saves the day.
With volume two, Low Power: A Graphic Novel (Your Pal Fred) Michael Rex continues our Robot Friend Fred’s journey to make everyone friends. This time around we have “fun” with the Dystopian Earth Fred now finds himself in (putting out battles, fires and more at every twist and turn), but also needing to take a journey to the sun so he can be recharged as he has a low power source. However, fighting is everywhere, friends need to be made, and even with Wormy as his guide, (his only real friend, even if she is a thief) Fred might not make it in time. But we also learn that it’s okay to not be recharged right away if friends are made and bad guys are found out doing bad things and are punished for it. But you know, nicely.
This series has lots of 10-year-old boy humor (farts, silly repetitive humor, an almost battle between the people who have innie belly buttons and the people with outie belly buttons, and more) and good times are had by all. Maybe. Stronger than volume one (which seemed to have a lot of build up and a fast solution at the end), we have a familiar, but fresh (even if there is a lot of methane around) story.
